Western Australian police have arrested and charged three additional climate activists in relation to a protest outside Woodside boss Meg O’Neill’s house after the ABC handed over materials collected in the production of an investigation for Four Corners.

Police disclosure documents obtained by this masthead show the new footage was obtained by WA police on November 17, with arrests made five days later.

Nicholas Doyle, Tahlia Stolarski and Joana Partyka, members of the Disrupt Burrup Hub campaign group, were charged with conspiracy to commit an indictable offence on Wednesday. The trio was released on bail and will next appear at a Perth Magistrates Court on November 29.

Karen Percy, federal president of media union, MEAA told this masthead it is very disappointing that WA police pursued the matter, and that the ABC has now handed over the footage.

“The Four Corners program was scrutinising the way powerful groups – including WA police – were responding to climate activists.

“WA police had a clear conflict of interest in demanding the footage and the ABC should have recognised that.”

Percy said this kind of overreach from the police, and the ABC’s failure to push back, imperils public interest journalism, as well as breaking trusts with the public.

WA police told this masthead it was open to reducing the scope of its order to produce handed to the ABC. In a statement on Thursday, it confirmed its State Security Investigation Group had conducted further investigations into an alleged incident on August 1, with three further individuals charged as a result of the inquiries.
